Black And Gold

Thundermother are a hard rock band from Sweden formed in 2009. The band have released five albums to date - 'Rock 'N' Roll Disaster' (2014), 'Road Fever' (2015), 'Thundermother' (2018), 'Heat Wave' (2020), and 'Black And Gold', released in 2022...

...featuring Thundermother's trademark hard rocking bluesy rock 'n' roll sound! The rock sensation from Sweden have had an incredible few years - touring with bands such as WASP, Michael Monroe, Danko Jones and Rose Tattoo, and performing at the legendary Wacken Open Air Festival in Germany. Not to mention an upcoming 2022 world tour with the Scorpions and Whitesnake! The band pummel their growing fan base with a stunning blend of heavy hitting hard rock 'n' roll that ignites a party atmosphere of the highest order. The bands new album 'Black And Gold', is a monster twelve song barrage of infectious hard rock that I can only describe as an incredible mix of rock legends AC/DC and Whitesnake. After a major line-up change five years ago, the band now feature a stable line-up led by the bands founder, the fabulous Filippa Nassil (guitar), along with the energetic Emlee Johansson (drums), the marvellous Mona Lindgren (bass), and the blues soaked vocals of the gorgeous Guernica Mancini.

As mentioned earlier, the bands new album features a monster twelve songs - 'The Light In The Sky' launching the album in trademark Thundermother style...bombastic, bluesy, and overly punchy. 'The Light In The Sky' sounds as though it's been written as a concert opener - and what an opener it'll be! The oomph and energy oozing from 'The Light In The Sky' is phenomenal, along with the vocal grit and rasp of Guernica - Thundermother are back, and hitting as hard as ever. Title song 'Black And Gold' picks up the pace and tempo, injecting a little of the world famous AC/DC boogie. Yet it's the speed of 'Black And Gold' that stands out, not to mention the melodious intent. Definitely one of the most infectious and catchy songs the band have ever released. A real rocker, and one that will set the world of hard rock on fire. Come on everyone - raise your hands high in the air. For 'Raise Your Hands' is a swinging rock and roller that'll have everyone punching the air in pure delight. Blues, classic rock and good old fashioned swagger combine perfectly as 'Raise Your Hands' majestically marches on with authority and aplomb.

The obligatory ballad for a hard rock album takes front and centre in the shape of 'Hot Mess', with lighters all over the world illuminating the sky. The vocal grit, rasp, and bluesy style of Guernica is at its sultry best - 'Hot Mess' a powerful power ballad, and probably the best the band have ever done...so far. And with an emphatic guitar riff and a major gear change, 'Wasted' powers on with all the hard rocking excellence you've come to expect from Thundermother. A highly sing a long-able chorus bodes well for an entertaining live performance and a crowd participation moment of the highest order. With an incredible upsurge in energy, 'Watch Out' hits hard and kicks harder! A pace changer, a tempo changer, and definitely a mood changer - 'Watch Out' is gonna make everyone extremely happy with its addictive and infectious rhythm. I defy anyone to not be smiling, head nodding and foot tapping right now. And with Guernica stating "watch out mother fuckers" in her sexiest voice during the last few seconds of the song - believe me, you had better watch out!

Thundermother deliver a huge party rock anthem in the shape of the heavy hitting 'I Don't Know You'. And I tell ya - anthemic party rock has never sounded so good! 'I Don't Know You' can also be described as stadium (or arena) rock. For its big chorus is the stuff of football stadia the world over...which is where the band should be performing - the coming tour with the Scorpions and Whitesnake the perfect stage for Thundermother to come of age and rise to the upper echelons of the worldwide hard rock scene. Hard hitting rock and roll comes to the surface with 'Looks No Hooks' projecting an air of sleaze and glam too. The kinda sleaze and glam that Aerosmith brought to the world during the late seventies and into the eighties. And at only two thirds the way through, 'Black And Gold' (the album) is turning in a terrific performance and is surely the best album Thundermother have released to date. The legendary AC/DC boogie is the basis for 'Loud And Free', AC/DC not the only influence here - I detect glam rockers Poison and Motley Crue too! Thundermother are everything the icons of hard rock created over four decades ago - and so much more. There's a reason why they're labelled as the "rock sensation from Sweden".

Without dropping the energy level, the band storm on with the fast paced 'Try With Love' - an infectious and bloody brilliant gallop of hard rock bordering on heavy metal. 'Try With Love' is the heaviest song on offer and will appeal equally to fans of rock and metal. Thundermother pushing their boundaries and dipping their toes in a different musical genre. But back to the thundering hard rock style that is the bands forte, 'Stratosphere' is a "get the party started" tune that exemplifies what the band stand tall and proud for. I have had the pleasure of reviewing three Thundermother albums - 'Thundermother', 'Heat Wave', and (of course) 'Black And Gold', with each one better than the last. The band are incredible - long live Thundermother. And to the sensational finale to the album - 'Borrowed Time' a mellow and serene stroll with a lyrical theme surrounding the immediate after show high, and the come down from said high, dissecting the performance, discussing what went well, what went bad, and how to improve for next time. 'Borrowed Time' is a song that every performer can relate to. Such a poignant song, and perfectly placed at the albums end.

Overall, a hard rocking forty two minutes full of energy and oomph, Thundermother have delivered their best album to date.
