Sorrows |

Veonity are a power metal band from Sweden formed in 2013 releasing their debut album 'Gladiator's Tale' in 2015. The bands sophomore release, was the concept album 'Into The Void', released in 2016 and is best described as a dystopic, futuristic space saga. The bands third album 'Legend Of The Starborn', was a sequel to 'Into The Void', and was released in 2018. 'Sorrows' is the bands fourth album, and was released in 2020.
Sweden has produced a number of cracking albums recently - 'Heat Wave' by Thundermother, 'Feeding The Machine' by Wolf, 'Infidel' by Ambush, 'Shadow Rising' by Stormburner, 'Biomechanicals' by Metalite, and 'Damnation' by Aerodyne...just to name a few (that I have also been fortunate to review) - with the fourth album by Veonity an absolute barnstormer! The band follow 2018's superb 'Legend Of The Starborn' with a ten song barrage of melodic power metal. Veonity have shelved the epic, cinematic, and emphatic roar of 'Legend Of The Starborn' for a more "back to basics" power metal performance. Opening with (the customary European power metal album opening), the atmospheric and crescendo building instrumental 'Broken', Veonity take flight proper with 'Graced Or Damned', roaring forth with majestic abandon. Full of energy and power, 'Graced Or Damned' is melodic power metal of the most infectious nature, with the chorus a highly sing a long able affair. What a start...
...a start that gets even more energetic with the pulsating 'Back In To The Dark'. Thundering hard and highly melodic, Veonity have got the power metal formula bang on with 'Back In To The Dark' - infectious, catchy and memorable. The future of power metal is in very safe hands. The blistering 'Blinded Eyes Will See' is delivered at a phenomenal pace, yet loses nothing of the infectious catch-a-bility that is running through this album. Hard head banging and fists ferociously punching the air will accompany 'Blinded Eyes Will See' as it hurtles on by. And the pace shows no sign of slowing down either - in fact the pace quickens with the lightning speedster 'Where Our Memories Used To Grow'. Germany is the birthplace of power metal, and has produced many of the worlds greatest bands, but over the last decade Sweden are showing their mettle, having produced some great bands of their own - Veonity being one of the best! Bringing touches of the traditional heavy metal style to proceedings, 'Acceptance' is the heaviest song heard so far, yet the chorus is highly melodic and so catchy it beggars belief... Veonity got it spot on with 'Legend Of The Starborn', but have gone one step further with 'Sorrows' and got it bang on.
With no sign of the albums blistering pace slowing down, 'Free Again' sets a lightning pace as it hurtles forth at high velocity, outstripping many of the worlds fastest power metal bands, including the "kings of speed metal" DragonForce. 'Free Again' is fucking superb, and is the best song the album has to offer. Packing the weightiest punch on the album, 'Center Of The Storm' is a bombastic boomer, a thundering mid tempo storm full of so much electric energy it could power a small nation for years. 'War' brings a little bit more aggression to the album, courtesy of a lower tone from the bands singer, a real throaty almost guttural performance that's not to be heard anywhere else on the album. And to the final song, and just when I thought we'd get through an entire modern day power metal album without a visit to power ballad territory - here we go with 'Fear Of Being Alive' - for the first minute anyways...and fuck I spoke too soon! I take it all back Veonity... We reach the final song without a single power ballad in sight. The anthemic 'Fear Of Being Alive' opens in ballad mood, but boy when it begins proper, the cinematic vibe is superb, bringing goose bumps to the skin. A definite concert closer, 'Fear Of Being Alive' is a stadium anthem, an all together sing a long, and a fantastic end to a fantastic album. In a little over six years and four albums, Veonity have succeeded in making their way to the forefront of the worldwide power metal scene.
Overall, an absolute peach of a power metal album, Veonity once again deliver a barnstorming barrage of heavy hitting and infectious power metal.
