Fun?

Psython are a thrash metal band from the UK formed in 2014 releasing four albums to date - '...Outputs' (2016), 'HATRED' (2017), 'The Last Days Of The Good Times' (2018), and 'Fun?' (2024).

Emerging under my radar, I almost missed this release! Hooked on the band since their debut release eight years ago, I have thoroughly enjoyed every album Psython have released since, their brutal blend of aggression, speed and intensity simply mind blowing! Not to mention head bang-able to the absolute max - the ferocity on display across every album highly savage with a shit tonne of menace! Yet with their new (fourth) album, the Sheffield thrashers deliver more variety than a huge tin of Quality Street! Over forty minutes and ten songs, Psython tear through the genres of thrash and traditional heavy metal, visiting every nook and cranny to please both thrashers and metal traditionalists alike! The band are in scintillating form, kicking the album into life with the ferociously paced 'Hatchling' - and the searing thrash come metalcore attitude I've come to expect from Psython. Time for a bout of serious head banging methinks!

The band aren't just a fast and furious, hell bent for leather, all out aggression fuelled metal machine, there's plenty of melodious moments woven into every song Psython create - 'Crapitalist' hitting the ground with a gorgeous guitar riff! Blending traditional heavy metal with their thrash roots, the band plant one "foot on the monitor" to adopt the classic metal pose, even offering clean vocals alongside the usual snarling growl! The exotically titled 'Chugga Chug O'Doom' returns blistering pace and aggression to the fore, storming forth with attitude and angst! Over the years Psython have oozed a little cheeky sense of humour, 'Desiring Thorough Fornication' picking up the pace to hurtle on at over a hundred miles a fucking hour! The band are at their fastest here, vigorously banging the head of every listener, fan and follower around the world. Psython keep the incredible intensity at sky high levels with the title song 'FUN?' - a brutal, in your face slab of savagery! I hope you have a thick skin, 'cause the band are throwing everything at listeners here - even the kitchen fucking sink!

Switching gears and genres, 'GLORYZ' returns both traditional metal and clean vocals to the fore, Psython going as far to incorporate a little groove metal in there too - talk about opening your music up to a wider audience! An audience that's gonna see some alternative metallers pricking their ears up in the direction of 'GLORYZ' - 'Fun?' (the album) returning immediately to all out aggression and speed with the crossover thrash metal rampage 'Mild Anxiety'. If you think bands such as Anthrax and Mordred, you may just get some idea of how 'Mild Anxiety' sounds - 'WTFDYKAWYW?' maintaining the albums core pace, power and purpose! Not to mention intensity, for Psython are bludgeoning listeners with a raging and unforgiving barrage of in your face hostility! Yes readers - hostility! But within the red hot hostile atmosphere there's moments of pure thrash metal majesty, the band a ferocious force of nature!

And as the album hurtles on, the Sheffield thrashers are in no mood to relinquish the savage aggression, 'TechNo' a blistering romp of all out savagery with bouts of brutality thrown in for good measure! All album long Psython have kept the pedal firmly pressed to the metal, not slowing down for anything or anyone - 'Hero' jumping into traditional metal territory right at the anthemic end! Add in some alternative, Grungy elements, and you have the most varied song on offer, appealing to the widest audience ever! The band do a great job of reining in the all out of speed of every other song on the album, showing their willingness to experiment and take their music in a different direction. My only hope is that the bands next album appears on my radar sooner than this one did - 'cause I wouldn't wanna miss any of Psython's savage barrages!

Overall, a searing rampage of brutal savagery, 'FUN?' is packed to the rafters with aggression, speed and head bang ability.
