Alca la Destral

Destral are a heavy metal band from Spain formed in 2017, releasing their debut E.P. 'No Hay Vuelta Atras' in 2020, a second E.P. 'Fembres Pecadrius' in 2022, and the bands debut full length album 'Alca la Destral' in 2024...

...featuring six new songs alongside three that first appeared on the bands 2022 E.P. Destral's style of metal hints at some of the greats of the heavy metal genre, greats such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Saxon - the one minute effects laden instrumental 'Intro', strolling into life with an eerie, almost haunting feel as it builds tension towards, and eventually into the album opener 'Fantasmas'...

...the band roaring outta the blocks to plant one foot firmly on the old school heavy metal monitor! The pace and power here is incredible, Destral vigorously rocking the heads back and forth of every single listener, fan and follower around the world - a stunning opening salvo from the Spanish outfit, the band power on with an increased level of heaviness courtesy of 'Allibera't'. Yet with a much more melodious intent, 'Allibera't' shudders the ground and wobbles walls as Destral stride purposefully on by! An opening brace to turn the heads of everyone everywhere in the direction of Spain, 'Alca la Destral' motors on with the classic sound of the iconic NWOBHM evolution - 'Silenci per al malferit' resonating fully with the guitar tone of good old fashioned, British heavy metal! Spain may be over twelve hundred miles from the UK, but the Spaniards have got the essence of British heavy metal spot on.

And with no let up in sight from the relentless pace of 'Alca la Destral', Destral actually drop a gear for 'Condenado', a more mid paced mid tempo feel descending upon the album, the band maintaining the phenomenal intensity level it began with! I tell ya readers, if you're looking for a full on melodic heavy metal assault to head bang to, you're in the right fucking place - the albums opening foursome packed to the rafters with immense head bang ability. The title song from the bands second E.P. 'Fembres Pecadrius', is next up, slow burning into life with a massive traditional metal feel that progresses to become a turbo charged torrent of thundering speed! As I mentioned in my previous Destral review, my grasp of the Spanish language is limited to "hola", "gracias", and (also) "adios", but that'd be of no fucking use here, because the band sing in Valencian - the official language of the Valencian Community (or simply Valencia). And to be honest, it doesn't really matter what language the band sing in, for music is a universal language understood by everyone - 'Nit fosca de l'anima' entering the fray with an emphatic upturn in energy and tempo. Reminiscent of the glorious eighties NWOBHM sound, 'Nit fosca de l'anima' is heavy metal as it should be - fast paced, sing a long-able and highly head bang-able!

And with buzzing guitars like it's nineteen eighty four all over again, 'Exterminacion' boasts the instantly recognisable sound of old school heavy metal from the eighties when bands such as Angel Witch, Diamond Head, Raven, and (the aforementioned) Iron Maiden rewrote the heavy metal handbook! These bands along with a whole host of others, redefined and reinvented the sound of metal into the lovable beast it is today - 'Barrejat' storming into life to become the fastest song heard so far! Destral scorch the earth with incredible pace and power, galloping forth at a furious pace to provide the head bangers of the world the perfect opportunity for some neck breaking head banging as they try to keep up with the band! And bringing a barnstorming album to a close, 'Historia sense final' clocks in at six and a half minutes in length - by far and away the longest song on offer! The band are at their slowest here, strolling forth with all the previous energy and oomph held back - until one and a half minutes in when Destral let it all go and a mid tempo thunderstorm takes over, along with a little bit of an anthemic aura too! 'Historia sense final' does change gear later on to return the iconic metal gallop to the fore, the band rounding off a very good album in staggering style.

Overall, a fast paced gallop of incredibly melodious heavy metal with a sky high infectious level and immense head bang ability.
