Human Fortress are an epic power metal band from Germany formed in 1997 releasing their debut album, 'Lord Of Earth And Heavens Heir' in 2001. Over the next ten years, the band released three more studio albums, 'Defenders Of The Crown' (2003), 'Eternal Empire' (2008), and 'Raided Land' (2013). The bands fifth album, 'Thieves Of The Night' was released in 2016, with their sixth album 'Reign Of Gold' a 2019 release.
With their new album, Human Fortress rein back on the power metal gallop of 'Thieves In The Night', adopting a more melodic and grandeur vibe. The one minute intro 'Imminence', is a gentle crescendo that eases the listener in - to the hard rocking highly energetic 'Thunder'. All guns blazing, 'Thunder' is high tempo melodic power metal to get the adrenaline flowing, and is a corker to kick start the album. With heads nodding hard and fists punching the air, the title song 'Reign Of Gold' continues the pulsating melodic power metal assault. With its catchy and sing a long able chorus, 'Reign Of Gold' is an ear pleaser, and must surely become a fan favourite, especially in a live arena. Moving the album in a more mid tempo direction, 'Lucifers Waltz' is more epic metal territory than the opening double salvo - maybe even breaking into the symphonic metal genre.
'Bullet Of Betrayal' is a heavier, more upfront and in your face offering yet still maintains the albums overall grandiose power metal feel. And now for one of the standout moments the album has to offer - the power ballad 'Shining Light'. As it comes to life the level of emotion is sky high. Lighters are gonna be held aloft all around the world in salute to a great emotionally charged ballad. 'Surrender' brings a much heavier feel to the album, a foot stomp heavy enough to break bones as it tramples you. The pace of 'Surrender' quickens over the chorus break, but soon returns to the slower pace as the next verse comes along.
'The Blacksmith' brings a little oomph to the album. Punchy and powerful, 'The Blacksmith' increases the pace and energy, and fairly sizzles as it gallops on to an end. 'Martial Valor' brings a touch of the hard rock genre to the album, thumping hard and kicking harder. Increasing pace for the chorus, 'Martial Valor' trots to a finish. With a spectacular explosion of pace, 'Legion Of The Damned' speeds on at high velocity, delivering the glorious, and traditional style of classic power metal. Another standout moment the album has to offer, 'Legion Of The Damned' will definitely get heads banging. And what's this? The final song! Where did the last forty five minutes go? In my opinion, when you lose track of time listening to an album and the final song arrives as a surprise - it's a definite sign of how good the album is, and how well it pulled you in to its aura. 'Victory' ends the album on a high, full of pace and power as it fairly scampers to a finish.
Overall, an album chock full of melodic power metal, and sing along choruses, 'Reign Of Gold' has definitely scored a victory.
