Out Of The Dark |

Frozen Land are a symphonic power metal band from Finland, forming in 2017 releasing two albums to date - 'Frozen Land' (2018) and 'Out Of The Dark' (2023).
Five years after the bands electrifying entrance into the world of power metal, the Finnish five piece are back, armed with nine new songs to destroy and devastate the airways! Frozen Land's self titled debut was an incredible romp of fast paced power metal to get the blood pumping - so my expectations are for more of the same. And as soon as album opener 'King's A Bitch' launches with a traditional "metal scream" and a full steam ahead attitude, the band prove me right! But hang on a minute - haven't I heard this tune before? Give me a moment... Oh yes, the mighty Helloween, and 'Eagle Fly Free' (off the bands 1988 'Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part II' album) - 'King's A Bitch' bearing an uncanny resemblance to the German metallers classic song! Fingers crossed Frozen Land are just paying homage to one of heavy metals greatest bands - Helloween the undoubted masters of power metal! And despite its similarity, 'King's A Bitch' is a blistering opener, highly infectious, immensely likeable, and a massive appetite whetter for the rest of the album.
An album that roars with the equal speedy 'The Prophecy', dropping a gear to become a glorious melodic power metal march. The "foot on the monitor" feel of traditional heavy metal is highly evident along with the iconic Iron Maiden style gallop - Frozen Land perfectly merging a couple of different metal styles. A head turning opening double quickly becomes a treble, the band marching on at pace, delivering the fastest song heard so far, 'Dying Of The Light', an incredibly quick sprint! The band are in full flight here, banging heads with vim and vigour, the worlds mosh pits going fucking mental!
And as seems to be the modern day custom, a power ballad makes an appearance on a power metal album - 'Don't You Ever Leave Me' Frozen Land's contribution to balladry! From the keyboard led and soulful vocals of the first section, through hymn-like majesty to the "arms swaying in the air" atmosphere, 'Don't You Ever Leave Me' is right up there as an emotion fuelled ballad. Straight back into heavy metal land we go with the thunderous 'The Northern Star', punching hard and kicking harder, the force of a thousand wrecking balls raining down on every listener, fan and follower. The sound of melodic power metal blended with traditional heavy metal has never sounded so good, Frozen Land continuing to become a stronger force in the worldwide metal scene.
Power and pace comes to the fore once more as 'White Lightning' roars outta the blocks and storms on to leave only smoke in its wake! The band are in top gear, zooming down the heavy metal highway with no regard for speed limits or the local poliisi! The title song 'Out Of The Dark' takes melodic metal to new heights - the hard rocking swagger likely to attract many rock fans to the bands music too. And even though Frozen Land are a metal band, the album has been a glorious mix of symphonic, power and traditional metal - the band showing maturity and growth from their 2018 debut.
And did I just say maturity! Well that was a "foot in the mouth" comment if ever there was one! For the band show a less mature side for 'The Slayer' - introducing a nineties Eurodance feel! Yea I know, the decade of raves and dance parties making a sonic return courtesy of a Finnish metal band! Whatever next! A second foot in the mouth comment that's what - for the band go even deeper into Eurodance with the final song 'Senorita'. A thumping electronic rock beat coupled with heavy metals much harder edge, and Frozen Land become the hosts of a nineties Ibiza dance party! In 2023!!! 'Senorita' is actually a lot of fun - you can head bang, you can dance, you can do whatever the fuck you want. 'Cause the band are just having fun, I don't think we need to worry about Frozen Land moving into a different musical realm in the future. The band are a metal band, and I'll bet you some serious money they'll still be a metal band when their third album sees the light of day!
Overall, an infectious and varied album of symphonic power metal with a surprising musical twist at the end.
