Power Of The Chosen One |
||||||
Feanor are a heavy metal band from Argentina formed in 1996 releasing four demos through their formative years, culminating with the bands debut album 'Invencible' released in 2005. The bands second album 'Hellas' emerged in 2010, with third album 'We Are Heavy Metal', released in 2016. 'We Are Heavy Metal' was the bands first album to be sung in English, and featured many special guests from the rock/metal world, including former Black Sabbath singer Tony Martin, and former Manowar guitarist David Shankle. 'Power Of The Chosen One' is the bands fourth album, and was released in 2021...
...and features once again David Shankle, and Wizard vocalist Sven D'Anna on his second album as lead singer for Feanor. The new album features ten songs across an incredible sixty four minutes - including the mammoth twenty minute, nine parter, 'The Return Of The Metal King', based on the ancient Greek poem 'The Odyssey' by Homer. But before that epic masterpiece, the album storms outta the gate with the fast and furious 'Rise Of The Dragon'. Pounding the traditional "foot on the monitor" style of heavy metal, Feanor launch their fourth effort in a gloriously galloping manner. Moving into more melodic metal territory, the title song 'Power Of The Chosen One' is an elegant and majestic mid tempo march, invoking a comparison with British legends Judas Priest. The power oozing from 'Power Of The Chosen One' (the song) is overwhelming, and may actually attract power metal fans to the band.
As you would expect from seasoned musicians - singer D'Anna and guitarist Shankle especially - their delivery is nothing short of excellent, the band increasing the pace to speed metal status with the blistering 'This You Can Trust'. The scorching pace is red hot, the head bang ability ferocious, and the mosh pits of the world a blazing frenzy. Bringing the anthemic, epic, and glory styles of heavy metal to the fore, Feanor salute the metal community with the anthem 'Metal Land', inviting their fans to "come with us to metal land" and sing with them the rabble rousing, call to arms chorus. Glorious stuff! Picking up the pace once more, 'Hell Is Waiting' is "foot on the monitor" styled heavy metal, harking back to the eighties halcyon days for the evolution of metal. Feanor are heavy metal through and through, and are not afraid to show it.
'Together Forever' returns the 'Priest flavour of earlier, pushing the band through the melodic metal style right into the epic and glory genres once more. As the album unravels, Feanor are displaying a myriad of metal styles, not content to just gallop down one avenue, making 'Power Of The Chosen One' (the album) one of those albums that you just haven't got a clue in which direction it will turn next - with the next direction, a mosey down a more menacing avenue with 'Bringer Of Pain'. A darker feel and a menace not heard so far, 'Bringer Of Pain' is suitably heavy, yet highly melodic and infectious. Amazing! Moving to the hymn-like style of metal - similar to Shankle's former band Manowar - Feanor stride majestically on with 'Lost In Battle'. An epic in every sense of the word, 'Lost In Battle' is big, bold, and a ginormous slab of emotion fuelled heavy metal.
Keeping the hymn-like style flowing, 'Fighting For Our Dream' is a mellow slice of balladry - yes balladry, as lighters can be held high to this one - but in a more call to arms manner than a mushy one. 'Fighting For Our Dream' has the feel of a concert closer, an epic big finish the likes of what happens at an opera. Bloody great stuff! And talking of what happens at an opera - Feanor's epic masterpiece, the mammoth twenty minute, nine parter, 'The Return Of The Metal King' is a phenomenal piece of mastery. Based on the Greek poem 'The Odyssey' by Homer, the nine parter tells the story of Odysseus' ten year struggle to return home after the Trojan War, a struggle filled with battling mystical creatures and facing the wraths of Gods. Now I'm not gonna review each part as individual songs, neither am I gonna review the song as a whole - all I will say, is that 'The Return Of The Metal King' is more like an operatic performance, filled with tension and anticipation, and should be listened to loud, very loud. A truly epic and arousing way to end an album.
Overall, an hour of engaging and infectious heavy metal showcasing varying styles that are attractive to a wide array of metal fans.
