Son Of The Sun

Sunlight are a heavy metal band from Greece formed in 2009, releasing two albums to date - 'My Own Truth' (2015) and 'Son Of The Sun' (2024).

Founded by guitarist Makis Kaponis and keyboardist Panos Anastopoulos, Sunlight has undergone a number of line-up changes over the years along with a shift in musical direction from a metal & rock band to a more heavy come power metal one - the bands line-up for the album completed by vocalist Dimitris Giannakopoulos, drummer Dimitris Kapoukakis, and bassist Panos Mourtzinos. The bands new album is nine songs and forty five minutes long featuring a glorious mix of traditional, and power metal with an almighty melodious intent - album opener 'Son Of Fire' quickly into its stride to pound the ground with immense force! The head bang ability rising outta 'Son Of Fire' is off the charts, Sunlight planting one "foot on the monitor" to gallop forth at full throttle. A sensational opening gambit, and one that's gonna turn the heads of every metaller around the world in the direction of Greece.

And with the attentions of every metaller held very tightly, Sunlight maintain the albums barnstorming start with 'Thoughts Of Despair (Apognosis)' - the iconic metal gallop more prominent than ever as the hearts of every old school metalhead melts quicker than a T-800 in a vat of molten steel! The opening brace have surged forth with immense energy and drive, the sound of highly infectious, melodic heavy metal rising high in the air - along with listener's fists too, everyone punching the air in pure delight! A sparkling opening one-two becomes a sparkling one-two-three as 'Forever Lost' shines brighter than either of the two previous songs, the feel good factor pouring outta the album so far, infecting everyone on the entire fucking planet - the band having an absolute ball as smiles a mile wide appear on every listener's face! And those smiles are only gonna get wider, as 'Mystery' thunders on with a little more oomph than heard up to this point, the Greek outfit oozing an incredible amount of power and panache! The meld of traditional metal with power metal is a gorgeous sound, Sunlight standing tall and proud in the gap between the two genres to deliver a mouth watering array of exhilarating heavy metal.

To say 'Son Of The Sun' is the biggest surprise of the year, may also be the biggest understatement of the year, Sunlight adding a weighty touch of hard rock to the bands sonic arsenal as 'Secret Of Silence' strolls along the border wall between rock and metal - fans of both rock and metal thoroughly enjoying 'Secret Of Silence'. There may be a mellower feel in the air right now, but it's nowhere ballad country as the band bring a hymn-like anthemic aura to bear as well! And hitting the ground harder than everything heard so far, 'Echoes Of Hope' presses the pedal firmly to the metal to storm off at full throttle, the band roaring along the aftokinitodromo at high speed! The level of head bang ability right now is through the fucking roof, every mosher and head banger around the world going bat-shit crazy over this one!

The album has gotten better and better with each song that marches on by, Sunlight making a late charge for the Album Of The Year award - 'Can't Let You Go' striding into view with one hell of an upbeat nature! A party atmosphere too, the band oozing a happy mood inducing aura that surely no-one can resist, especially when the immensely sing a long-able chorus arrives - "So baby can you feel my love for you, And all the things I do for you are true, And every road you walk I'll follow you, I can't let you go. So baby I can feel your breath tonight, Your skin your lips are close and drive me wild, And every step you take wrong or right, I can't let you go". Absolutely sensational stuff from Sunlight, and definitely one of the best (new) songs I've heard all year - 'Bridge Of Life' keeping the hammer down harder than the Norse God Thor! The band are at full tilt here, shuddering the ground with a mesmerising march, every metal traditionalist everywhere drooling at just how fucking gorgeous 'Bridge Of Life' is! Not to mention the album as a whole - an album that comes to an end with just as much get up and go as every other song on offer! 'Sunrise' maintains the sensational gallop of the entire album, the attraction of every single song on 'Son Of The Sun' is stronger than gravity - this is surely one album that's gonna stay on everyone's playlists for a very long time to come.

Overall, a terrific album of infectious, melodic heavy come power metal resulting in a stunning array of superbly entertaining songs.
