Seventh Crystal are a melodic rock band from Sweden, formed in 2019 by Perpetual Etude singer Kristian Fyhr - the bands line-up completed by bassist Olof Gadd, drummer Anton Roos, and guitarists Emil Dornerus and Gustav Linde. The band have released three albums to date - 'Delirium' (2021), 'Wonderland' (2023), and 'Entity' (2024).
Prolific since their formation five years ago, Swedish rockers Seventh Crystal release their third album in just four years - the band continuing to grow and explore other musical directions such as progressive rock, and even heavy metal! Yes readers, heavy metal, 'Entity' elevating the bands sound to a higher realm than 'Wonderland' - the new album consisting of an incredible thirteen songs across a heavy hitting hard rocking fifty two minutes! 'Oathbreaker' sets the album on its way with a huge bombastic barrage of hard rock, the band marching majestically outta the gate with shoulders back and head held high - Seventh Crystal returning to the fore with a heavier sound to make many of the bands fans and followers sit up with a start!
And have a smile wider than the Gota alv river - 'Entity' roaring through the gears to storm off at an electrifying pace with 'Thirteen To One', the band hitting the brakes after just twenty one seconds as Seventh Crystal explore the bands new musical direction by entering the realm of progressive rock come metal! 'Thirteen To One' is a pace changing tempo changing swagger roaming all over the hard rock and heavy metal domains, the band leaving no stone unturned in terms of varying the styles of music on show, '404' strolling into view with a cloak of balladry wrapped tightly around it! In fact, the band heavy things up a little by introducing an anthemic hymn-like nature which soon follows the same path as the previous song - a path that winds its way through a progressive pace changing landscape! The variation across the albums first three songs has been eclectic, Seventh Crystal widening their musical horizons to new and uncharted widths - 'Path Of The Absurd' adopting a more in your face attitude along with a buzzing guitar riff that'd not be out of place coming outta the legendary NWOBHM evolution! There's been an inkling of heavy metal sprinkled over everything heard so far, the band bringing together two of the greatest genres of music ever, and sticking 'em together with a progressive glue!
The intensity of 'Entity' too has been spot on, holding everyone's attentions tightly and not letting go, the Swedish rockers entering melodic rock territory with an almighty thud courtesy of 'Architect Of Light', the infectious level taking a sharp upward trajectory - every listener everywhere smiling wider than ever! The multitude of angles the band are coming at the senses with is (almost) overwhelming, the album turning in one of those performances that make it equally attractive to both rockers and metallers! But then as we all know, rockers and metallers have always liked each others musical preferences - even if it's not admitted! 'Interlude' is a one minute spoken word come instrumental passage that builds an unbearable tension filled atmosphere - Seventh Crystal launching headlong into the heaviest song heard so far, 'Blinded By The Light' coming straight outta metal country to hit you right between the eyes! The thundering avalanche of heavy metal here is all conquering, the band continuing to roam between the genres of rock and metal!
'Entity' has been a "can't stop listening" album since it began, and there's absolutely no sign of that changing as Seventh Crystal stride straight into balladry once more, 'Siren Song' bringing a fairly serene and tranquil atmosphere to the fore - listeners everywhere raising lighters high in the air and swaying from side to side! But there's so much reined in power trying to escape, the band doing an admirable job of holding it all back - letting it all burst free as the three minute mark approaches! And quite aggressively too it has to be said, the vocals taking on a menacing nature not heard before! Every song on offer clocks in at around three and a half to four and a half minutes in length, making 'Entity' a fairly quick moving album - an album that returns a progressive metal feel in the shape of 'Versus'. The upturn in pace, power and punch is phenomenal, Seventh Crystal maintaining their wide ranging approach to musical styles, an approach that's gonna see their fanbase triple in double quick time! And with even more energy than ever, 'Mayflower' makes a lively entrance, the band striding along the border wall between rock and metal, proudly parading a progressive nature that just gets stronger and stronger the longer the album runs!
A slow tempo descends upon the album as 'Push Comes To Shove' strolls into view, the band peering over at ballad country but remaining one full stride outside - Seventh Crystal hitting the accelerator hard at two minutes in to roar off at full throttle, the iconic "metal gallop" making its weighty presence felt! 'Push Comes To Shove' is a sparkling pace changing, tempo changing, texture altering aural assault of everything the band are aiming for musically, and is one of the many highlights on 'Entity' - 'A Place Called Home' revelling in the bands newfound direction! The energy and upbeat feel here is incredible, Seventh Crystal must have had a ball recording this one, as 'A Place Called Home' features just a little o' the happy nature of a party anthem! And unbelievably, the final song is on its way, the album romping by in the blink of eye - just where did the last fifty minutes go! 'Song Of The Brave' sees, or rather hears balladry come forth for one last time, the band introducing a hymn-like anthemic nature too, 'Song Of The Brave' probably too heavy for lighters in the air, but go ahead and raise 'em anyway - it can be like a salute!
Overall, a twisting, turning album that meanders through rock and metal territory with a lot of progressive, ballad and anthemic influences.
