Nurcry are a heavy metal band from Spain formed in 2021 releasing three albums to date - 'Alma libre' (2022), 'Destino, yo te busco' (2023), and 'Renacer' (2024).
Founded by guitarist Angel Gutierrez, the bands line-up for the new album is completed by vocalist Kike Fuentes (Dramah), guitarists Manu Acilu (Death & Legacy) and Juanjo Alcaraz (Doxa, Lethargus), bass player Pedro Diaz and drummer Jason S. (Redencion Zero) - 'Renacer' a twelve song, fifty minute barrage of full on and highly head bang-able heavy metal! And right from the off too, Nurcry are immediately into their stride with the album opener 'Indomito' - the Spanish outfit planting their feet firmly on the old school heavy metal monitor to gallop furiously outta the blocks! The sound of traditional metal in full flight is a glorious sound, and one that can be found relentlessly beating in my heart, for I am a metalhead through and through. And even though Nurcry are singing (presumably) in their native tongue, it doesn't make any difference whatsoever to the enjoyment gained from the music, it just reinforces the fact that music is a universal language everyone understands. And bringing the sound of the iconic NWOBHM to the fore, 'Nino Invisible' harks back forty years to the nineteen eighties when bands such as Iron Maiden, Saxon and Judas Priest were defining the traditional metal sound - Nurcry perfectly recreating the sound of that era! A highly engaging and entertaining opening double, the band keep their foot to the floor as 'Megalomania' picks up the pace to roar off at top speed! The head bang ability of the album since it began has been off the charts, 'Renacer's opening treble a threesome of unadulterated and unabashed old school heavy metal to make metal traditionalists all around the world drool profusely!
And the melodious intent from the band has been phenomenal too, 'Bella Luna' maintaining the albums recent upturn in pace to keep the heads of every listener everywhere rocking back and forth at an extreme rate of knots. The intensity of 'Renacer' is spot on, keeping attentions glued in the direction of Madrid as 'Salto al vacio' keeps the fast pace alive! Albeit at the heaviest tempo the album has offered so far, the band remaining firmly rooted in the heart of the heavy metal genre - and when the metal is this good why venture anywhere else! And with a gruffer, rougher, and tougher feel, 'Salvajes' hits the ground hard - very hard, yet loses none of the incredible melodious intent that Nurcry weave into every song they write! Simply stunning stuff from the Spanish six piece!
Every song on offer clocks in at around four minutes in length paving the way for a quick moving album with very little time to catch a breath, 'Fenix' striding tall and proud with shoulders held back, the band veering very close to the hard rock genre here to entice all the rockers of the world into the Nurcry universe - 'Fenix' one of those boundary breaking border crossing songs! And still the 'Renacer' rollercoaster rolls on, the band actually straddling the metal and rock border with 'Grita al cielo', the bold and bombastic nature appealing to every rock fan as well as the bands core metal ones. The rockier side of the band remains front and centre as 'Ciego errante' swaggers into view with all the aplomb of a hard rock band playing heavy metal! But rest assured, Nurcry are a metal band and always will be.
Returning to the realm of heavy metal with an emphatic thud, 'Galileo' thunders forth with a ground shuddering aura that's gonna wobble walls and crumble buildings into ruins - the band resuming their rightful place at the centre of the heavy metal genre. And that's where they stay for '7 brujas', a boisterous opening barrage giving way to the classic gallop of old school, traditional heavy metal - and at pace too, the high level of head bang ability rising just that little bit higher! Nurcry bring their third album to a close with another metal come rock offering, 'Eterna oscuridad' introducing a level of elegance not heard before, a little pomp rock too is tucked in there, the band shuffling through various styles of rock for the albums final hurrah.
Overall, an immensely melodic heavy metal album, Nurcry break down genre borders to bring elements of hard rock into their soundscape.
