Ignis E.P.

Firemage are a folk metal band from Portugal formed in 2019 releasing their debut E.P. 'Ignis' in 2024...

...featuring an array of musicians from the Portuguese underground metal scene - Tiago Costa (lead vocals, guitar), Ricardo Pereira (guitar, harsh vocals), Ana Ferreira (bass), Ricardo Santos (keys), Emanuel Moreira (drums), and Vania Ferreira (pipes). The bands mission "to embody the atmosphere of the Celtic/medieval fantastical and superstitious imagery through tales of merry, magic and mayhem, heavily charged with influences from worldwide folklore adorned with a modern approach to the folk metal genre" is a mission accomplished as far as I'm concerned!

The four songs on offer run for eighteen heavy minutes melding the bands folk roots with power and traditional heavy metal - 'Welcome To The Grove' setting the E.P. on its way with a blistering old school metal feel! And when I say old school, I don't just mean heavy metal, there's elements of elegant symphonic power metal within Firemage's (primarily) folk metal soundscape, the band oozing a sound that's both infectious and highly attractive to a very wide array of listeners. A sensational start to the E.P. 'Dance With The Fire' raises the bar a few notches, roaring through the gears to furiously gallop forth with pace and purpose - the level of head bang ability shooting right through the roof! Yet Firemage don't leave their elegance behind, 'Dance With The Fire' soaring high above the clouds to fly with angels.

The mix of clean and harsh vocals is spot on, the band mixing the ingredients to perfection, 'The Last March' strolling in with ballad intentions - which are emphatically dispelled at the one minute mark when an almighty foot stomp shudders the ground, every building within sonic range crumbling into dust! The bombastic oomph of 'The Last March' is overwhelming, the band crossing borders to deliver an anthemic, hymn-like folk metal swagger with a side order of symphonic power metal. And all too soon the E.P.'s final song is here, 'Turn Of The Wheel' maintaining the previous songs incredible swagger, but with an increased amount of majesty - Firemage rounding off a marvellous debut release in fine fettle.

Overall, a sensational four song avalanche of folk come symphonic come power metal with a very high level of elegance.
