No Warning

Venomous Maximus are a metal band from the USA formed in 2010, who released their debut album in 2012. The bands second album was released in 2015 and now in 2017 comes 'No Warning', the bands third album.

Mixing elements of heavy metal with Stoner and progressive, Venomous Maximus deliver a brand of very heavy and dark music, although an electro pop style intro 'I' opens proceedings, leading into the buzzing riffage led 'Spellbound'. Throaty and raspy, the vocals are Stoner in style and suit this type of abrasive metal perfectly. 'Pray For Me' is mid tempo in terms of pace and is very hard rocking as it strides forward. There is a nod back in time to the classic NWOBHM sound from the eighties evolution, highlighting bands such as Raven and Angel Witch, as 'Pray For Me' chugs on. Buzzing guitars and a sinister sounding rhythm push 'Return Of The Witch' along at a foot stomping mid tempo pace and the unique vocal style once again stands out. For someone (like me) who grew up during the NWOBHM evolution, the guitar buzz sound during 'Return Of The Witch' is straight out of the eighties and it's an absolute pleasure to hear...

In no way are Venomous Maximus a retro band though, they are very much playing in the here and now, with 'All Of My Dreams' a much more mellow and ballad like song. Stripped down and basic, 'All Of My Dreams' is very much vocal led and a departure from the bombastic heavy rocking nature of the rest of the album. 'II' is the second electro pop style song and thankfully is almost as short as its title...with the title song 'No Warning' an up tempo, high energy stomp of heavy metal. Venomous Maximus are an American band, with their sound heavily influenced by the world famous and classic traditional British heavy metal genre. 'No Warning' (the song) has pace, power and sparkling riffs with a sing a long style catchy chorus. I defy anyone not to be smiling and head nodding in one hundred percent appreciation of the classic heavy metal sound delivered by 'No Warning' (the song).

More melodic and hard rock than metal, 'Blood For Blood' is riff heavy and comes across with a much meaner sound than heard anywhere else on the album. The mid tempo chug will invoke very hard foot stomping and gentle head nodding. Acoustic and mellow, all twanging and plucking, 'Endless' is an instrumental that seems to have no real direction and seems out of place on the album, but here it is...and get past it you then have the pleasure of the final song, nearly ten minutes in length, or is it...? Full to the rafters with pulsating and pounding heavy riffs 'Sea Of Sleep', takes its influence from the doom style of legends Black Sabbath. With plenty of guitar work to enjoy, pace changes to keep up with, 'Sea Of Sleep' is a definite highlight.

Overall, a varied and intriguing journey through heavy riffs and NWOBHM inspired rhythms, with an old school metal vibe from start to finish.
