We Will Rise |
||||||
Tungsten are a melodic metal band from Sweden formed in 2016 by drummer Anders Johansson (ex HammerFall, ex Yngwie J Malmsteen's Rising Force), after listening to some songs that his sons, Karl and Nick had composed. The three of them formed Tungsten, with Karl on bass and Nick on guitars, adding Mike Andersson (Cloudscape, ex Planet Alliance, Fullforce) on vocals. The bands debut album 'We Will Rise' is a 2019 release, and was preceded by the single 'We Will Rise'.
"tungsten", as defined by the Cambridge Dictionary, is "a metal used in making light bulbs" - and Tungsten, the Swedish heavy metal band, are gonna be lighting up the worldwide metal scene with their ferocious yet melodic, fierce yet infectious, debut album 'We Will Rise'. It is a meandering stroll through the power, thrash, symphonic, and traditional heavy metal genres, and will captivate a wide ranging audience. And just before my review begins, a moment of panic - looking down the tracklist, the final song on offer is 'Wish Upon A Star'...surely it's not!...surely it can't be!...please don't let it be the song from Walt Disney's 1940 adaptation of Pinocchio...!...please...? The album opens with the first single off the album - 'We Will Rise' is a hard hitting slab of European power metal, a thunderous stomp of melodic metal that will nod heads hard, and have fans punching the air in delight in huge anticipation of what is to come. And what is to come is a ferocious assault of heavy hitting power metal, led by the symphonic touched melodic march of 'Misled'. Big riffing and punchy, 'Misled' is an anthemic monster that will have fans smiling from ear to ear. And then whoa ho ho, what a fucking thunderstorm hits the airways - 'The Fairies Dance' is a massive foot stomper of epic proportions, the heavy riffing heavier than the heaviest thing you can think of. Such power, such heaviness, such thunder, what an anthem...
...and then more melodic than anything heard so far, 'Coming Home' is an infectious, high energy stroll of hard hitting riffs, thumps and twangs. Tungsten have shown an incredible swagger over the albums opening four songs, and it ain't over yet, as the earlier thunderstorm makes an emphatic return in the (even heavier hitting) anthem 'It Ain't Over'. Featuring a darker, and a little more of a menacing vibe, 'It Ain't Over' is a power metal gem, equally infectious, catchy and addictive. And the menacing heaviness doesn't end there either, 'As I'm Falling' becoming just a little terrifying, with a much more aggressive vocal delivery. This is power metal variety of the style that German legends, and power metal pioneers Rage are most famous for. What a first half to the album, I can only imagine what the second half has to offer, but let's not imagine anymore, let's go...
...and enter the swaggering 'Sweet Vendetta', thundering along at a mighty mid tempo pace, steam rolling over anyone and anything in its way. Bold and brash with a Southern rock influence, 'Sweet Vendetta' is a corker. And then holy sweet mother of the icon you pray to, 'Animals' explodes into life with a thrash metal ferocity. High speed, high velocity and highly aggressive, heads will be banging hard and fast to this one. 'Animals' is by far and away the best song on offer, melding thrash, power, symphonic and hard rock elements together into one ferocious foray. Simply breathless. And what a melodic march 'Remember' is. If you take the best of the European style of melodic power metal and squeeze it into just one song, 'Remember' is that song. So catchy and sing a long able, 'Remember' is surely gonna be a crowd favourite sing a long. Tungsten are rising to the top of the power metal genre, and will continue to do so with songs such as 'To The Bottom'. High paced, highly energetic and a bombastic barrage of symphonic come power metal mastery, 'To The Bottom' is highly addictive. 'Impolite', is an aggressive, attitude laden rant of rage against impoliteness. Menacing as it struts its stuff, 'Impolite' will hit hard, making heads bang even harder. And now, as the final song approaches, panic levels are at their highest - 'Wish Upon A Star' (thankfully) is not that song, what a huge fucking relief... And in any case, for all you Walt Disney aficionados, the 1940 adaptation is actually titled 'When You Wish Upon A Star', so my panic attack could have been avoided. As for 'Wish Upon A Star' by Tungsten, it is a mighty mid tempo foot stomper of major epic proportions. It is a cinematic and emphatic ending to a glorious album of powerful power metal, that is both catchy and infectious in equal measures.
Overall, a power metal thunderstorm of heavy hitting anthems with touches of the symphonic and thrash metal styles weaved in.
