Final Gift E.P.

Skurk are a thrash metal band from Iceland formed in 1990 who released their debut album among family and friends and was never released officially. Shortly after, the band broke up and re-united years later in 2011 and decided to re record most of the songs off their debut and as a bonus, one new track. 'Final Gift' was released in 2014.

Skurk are a thrash metal band of the mid tempo pace variety and not of the up tempo speed pace and open the E.P. with 'Ruler', a steady stomp of heavy guitars and gruff, throaty vocals. Is there such a genre as melodic thrash metal ? 'Final Gift' does pick up the pace a little, the gruff vocals remain and you get a sense of rawness about this release. The guitar solo during 'Final Gift' is screechy and screams for attention. Atmospheric and haunting is 'Darkness' as it foot stomps into life weaving a path of devastation and destruction such is its heaviness.

Razor sharp guitars and 'Dead Again' bucks the trend of the E.P. as it does have pace. 'Dead Again' rattles along, thunderous and raw, with the same vocal delivery as heard all E.P. so far. Echoes of early Slayer and Exodus resonate through 'Dead Again', with its brutal onslaught of aggression. But all too soon, the mid tempo pace returns in the form of 'Chaindead'. Stamping and stomping, crushing skulls wherever it roams, 'Chaindead' is very heavy, very raw and is a rough and tough song. 'My Friend, The End, brings the E.P. to a close in a blaze of brutal riffs and thunderous rhythms. After a mid tempo opening minute, there is a dramatic change of pace and 'My Friend, The End' races to a blistering end.

Overall, mid tempo, very heavy thrash metal with a gruff vocal style, superb guitar work and some thunderous rhythms to make you reach for the aspirin.
