Simulacrum are a progressive metal band from Finland formed in 2000 who released their debut album in 2012 with their follow-up in 2015.

Atmospheric and chilling is the scene that is set by the instrumental opening salvo 'Timelapse' before 'Behind The Bolt Of Orion' charges in and thunders off at pace with guitars and keyboards almost at battle with each other and a very powerful vocal performance. With power and pace 'Behind The Bolt Of Orion' is near speed metal pace as it races on and on to an epic conclusion. A very heavy, doom metal inspired riff welcomes 'Broken' to the airways with vocals resembling a cross between throaty and rasping. As the song progresses, the dark and demonic sound remains, the vocals become cleaner and the guitar solo is a peach.

'Embrace The Animal Within' picks up the tempo and speed and is a top notch power metal song with blazing guitars complimented by the keyboards and a catchy chorus 'Deep In The Trenches' is progressive metal sounding with rasping guitars and a chug that will have you stomping your feet like a headcase. The vocals range from low and rasping to near soaring as the song meanders its way to an end. 'Embrace The Animal Within' picks up the tempo and speed and is a top notch power metal song with blazing guitars complimented by the keyboards and a catchy chorus.

There are two ten minute plus songs on the album, the first 'The Abomination' is a stroll through some superb guitar work, very heavy sounding and thunderous. A mix of vocal styles and treading in a number of different musical genres, 'Abomination' is wonderfully crafted and will keep you intrigued throughout its entirety. The second is the album closer 'A New Beginning' which has a lighter feel and contains much more instrumental work, with some of the vocals sounding more operatic than metal. Sandwiched between these epics are the title song 'Sky Divided', a thumping and pounding, very heavy and hard hitting emphatic blast of metal. And 'Enter Hyperion', a high intensity, high tempo romp of blazing riffs and thunderous drums.

Overall, atmospheric and emphatic, heavy and mature, this is an album influenced by many different musical styles to produce an aural pleasure, worth more than just the one listen.
