With Whips And Chains

Savage Master are a female fronted heavy metal band from the USA formed in 2013 releasing their debut album in 2014. An E.P. followed in 2015 and their second album 'With Whips And Chains' was released in 2016.

Savage Master owe much of their sound to the early days of the NWOBHM evolution when bands such as Raven, Angel Witch and Samson were creating the genre. Chugging riffs and relentless rhythms, the new album gets underway in the shape of 'Dark Light Of The Moon'. The mid tempo title song 'With Whips And Chains' is a heavy stomper that creates an anthemic style aura, with a chorus that just begs to be chanted. 'Path Of The Necromancer' does pick up the tempo, and chugs away endlessly, with the vocal delivery a blend of throaty rasp and low key screech. It is rare these days to find a band that can carry off the old school NWOBHM sound so well.

The buzzing twin guitar attack and galloping rhythm is relentless as 'Vengeance Is Steel' throws its weight across the airwaves causing havoc and chaos wherever it lands. Increasing the pace, energy and intensity 'Looking For A Sacrifice' is a head bangers dream with its relentless chug. Foot on the monitor, fist in the air, this is the old school NWOBHM sound from over thirty years ago...played in the modern era with modern technology. 'Satan's Crown' is thunderous and pummels the senses as it chugs relentlessly. I swear if you close your eyes you can smell the eighties - denim and leather clad fans packing the clubs and pubs.

Are Savage Master only ever gonna play the old school way? Only time will tell, but for now let's just revel in what they have achieved here. 'Burned At The Stake' once again treads the old school, traditional British heavy metal path. Savage Master are by no means a "retro" band, all material is their own. The guitar driven 'Black Hooves' is a heavy, mid tempo romp that will have you feet stomping and head banging furiously.  Leaving the best until last, Savage Master excel with 'Ready To Sin' and its anthemic style chorus. 'Ready To Sin' thunders along at pace and shows that the band are able to move away from the early eighties NWOBHM sound and display more of the evolved heavy metal sound. I just hope that 'Ready To Sin' sets the benchmark for their next album...

Overall, old school sounding NWOBHM with buzzsaw sounding guitars and galloping rhythms that will transport you back to the eighties.
