A Test Of Shadows |
||||||
Reternity are a heavy metal band from Germany formed in 2018, releasing their debut album 'Facing The Demons' in 2019. The band have been quick to record and release the follow up 'A Test Of Shadows', which emerged in 2020.
Blending many facets of heavy metal, Reternity return with their second album full to the brim with heavy hitting songs. For forty minutes, the band punch and pummel the senses with pace and melody, drawing influence from a wide array of metal genres. Album opener 'Sniper's Death' is quickly into its stride, portraying the classic galloping sound of traditional heavy metal. 'Sniper's Death' is very hard hitting, and will make heads turn and take notice, especially when the sing a long able chorus takes flight. With a slight drop in pace, 'This Is The End' continues the traditional metal assault, keeping the head bangers of the world happy with its infectious rhythm. A cracking opening double salvo, Reternity mean business with their second outing...
...an outing that takes on a much meatier stance with the blistering heavy hitter 'My Crush'. A slight feeling of menace accompanies 'My Crush', sending chills down the spine, and making hairs on the back of the neck stand up... The title song 'A Test Of Shadows' takes on an almost progressive feel as it strides on by - Reternity showing supreme confidence to expand their soundscape and drive their music forward in any direction they desire. 'A Grave Called Home' continues the progressive nature of the previous song, adding a much mellower vocal performance, and reducing the albums earlier oomph to a mid tempo wander. 'A Grave Called Home' is gonna appeal to fans over the metal border in heavy rock territory. The glorious sound of the iconic NWOBHM buzz lights up the album in the mighty shape of the fast paced '(We Were) The Gods'. With feet firmly planted on the monitor, Reternity gallop forth with purpose and urgency. What a cracking song to get the second half of the album underway...
Keeping the NWOBHM fire burning, 'Falling Shadows' is classic traditional metal at its most melodic. Mid tempo-ish, 'Falling Shadows' blends a few metal traits into an engaging song that has mass appeal. Landing with a thud in the heavy rock genre, 'You'll See The Sun' is a mid tempo, almost regal march. Add a touch of the anthemic, and Reternity create a call to arms feel. At just two and a half minutes in length, 'No Deeper Hole' is by far and away the shortest song on offer - and by crikey it fairly scorches into life at break neck speed. Adopting a fire and brimstone stance, 'No Deeper Hole' is thunderous, and will kick start bouts of furious head banging. Bringing the album to a close, is the heavily keyboards led 'Stranded', conjuring up images of lighters held aloft over a sea of swaying bodies. A bit of a departure from the rest of the album, but as I said earlier, Reternity are not afraid to take their music in whatever direction they want.
Overall, 'A Test Of Shadows' explores all four corners of the heavy metal genre, providing variety and diversity across all the songs on offer.
