The Rebirth E.P. |
||||||
Neptune are a heavy metal band from Sweden formed in 1980 releasing four demo's before disbanding in 1987. Reforming many years later, the band released the four song E.P. 'The Last Flight Of The Rafven' in 2019, with their first album of new music 'Northern Steel' emerging in 2020. Although I say "first album" - it is in fact the bands second album, following the 2018 compilation album 'Land Of Northern', featuring the bands early demo's. In 2022, the four song E.P. 'The Rebirth' was released...
...featuring re-recorded versions of some "fan favourite" songs from the 'Land Of Northern' compilation - and although these are (technically) old songs, I will review them as if they are new ones, with Neptune describing the E.P. as "a between release for the fans", as the band are in full swing writing and recording 'Mother Land'...the sequel to 'Northern Steel', due for release in 2023.
But right here, right now, we have four songs to review - the first of which is 'Enemies', a fast paced galloper that begs for listeners to head bang hard. And head bang hard you will, as the band power on with a glorious "foot on the monitor" feel, and a chant style chorus so sublime it's no wonder that 'Enemies' is a fan favourite. 'Ready To Fight' brings a more melodic mid tempo march to the E.P. moving forth with a Dio-esque maturity and a hard rocking 'The Final Countdown' era Europe feel - Europe, one of Sweden's greatest ever rock exports!
Picking up the pace, Neptune up the ante and thunder on with the heavy hitting 'Protector' - swaggering forward with a purpose and intent to rock the hell out of listeners everywhere. The band are no slouches when it comes to rocking hard, emanating a power driven style of metal that is both energetic and lively - a Neptune concert must be an amazing place to be! The final song 'Hard To Be Right', is mellower than any of the other three songs on offer, but in no way falls into the arena of balladry. If anything, the band stand tall in hard rock territory, with one foot on the bridge heading to the land of heavy metal.
Overall, a four song foray into the bands early history, Neptune bring to the present day some gems of the past.
