Dark Mother's Child |
||||||
Lankester Merrin are a melodic power metal band from Germany formed in 2019, releasing three albums to date - 'Upon The Forgotten' (2021), 'Dark Mother Rises' (2023), and 'Dark Mother's Child' (2024).
Saxony sensations Lankester Merrin return for their third album in just four years - the rising melodic metallers taking the world by storm with a crushing blend of power come traditional heavy metal, last year's 'Dark Mother Rises' an immensely infectious and highly head bang-able nine song romp! And whether by coincidence or devilish design, the bands new album also offers nine songs, Lankester Merrin evolving their sound to a heavier, harder hitting realm featuring up tempo gallops, mid tempo rockers, heavy double bass numbers and mighty power ballads - everything you could ever want from a melodic metal band! Lankester Merrin feature singer Cat Rogers, drummer Shawn Layer, guitarists Florian Schulz and Steffen Vorwald, and bass player Benjamin Offeney, the band on fucking fire, burning hotter than the sun as 'Dark Mother's Child' roars into life with opener 'Eye Of The Night'...
...the sound of heavy, melodic power metal rising high in the air! The band pound the ground very hard, 'Eye Of The Night' oozing an immense "foot on the monitor" traditional metal gallop - the kinda gallop that legendary metal pioneers Iron Maiden are famous for! The only difference between 'Maiden and Lankester Merrin (apart from their country of origin) is the band have a female lead singer, Rogers commanding the airways with a powerhouse performance! And keeping the pedal firmly pressed to the metal, 'Dark Mother's Child' storms on at pace with 'High Plains Drifter' and an even greater melodious intent, the infectious level shooting right through the fucking roof as every listener everywhere smiles from ear to ear with one of the biggest grins of the year!
And with good reason too, for the opening brace has been stunning, 'Hoist Up The Sail' making it a delightful threesome, Lankester Merrin hammering the ground harder than a jack hammer smashing through concrete! The intensity of the albums first three songs has featured an all conquering attention grabbing force that has everyone under the bands spell, 'Dark Mother's Child' a magical blend of traditional and power metal with just the slightest hint of thrash! 'Immortal Prince' brings a mighty foot stomp to the fore, you know what, scrub that - a mighty thunder stomp to the fore, the band slamming listeners through the floor and into the basement with mild brutality, 'Immortal Prince' changing through the gears after two minutes to resume the foot on the monitor gallop heard earlier. The album has been non-stop since it began, the German metallers not allowing anyone any time to take a breath, breaths which are gonna have to wait as 'In Rank And File' bustles into sight with the heaviest attitude seen so far! Or should that be felt! Either way, despite its heavy attitude, 'In Rank And File' remains incredibly melodic, Lankester Merrin maintaining their root heavy metal mission - to deliver highly melodious world conquering heavy come power metal! A mission that's well on its way to becoming a huge success, especially when the fast paced 'Lords Of The Flies' enters the fray to drop the jaws of every listener, fan and follower to the floor with a deafening thud! The mosh pits are gonna go fucking nuts over this one, every mosher rocking their head back and forth more vigorously than at any other time!
And if ever there's one song on offer here that pays homage to the old school NWOBHM sound along with the iconic metal gallop, it's 'Mastermind' - Lankester Merrin perfectly replicating a forty year old! And adding their own modern day ingredients too, 'Mastermind' rising up to become the best song on 'Dark Mother's Child' - the levels of power and pizzazz rocketing right off the charts! The breathless barrage of metal from the German five-piece is non-stop, just where do the band get their energy from! Wherever it is, fingers crossed it's an unlimited supply as there's still two songs to come - and did I just say that 'Mastermind' was the best song on offer! Well thanks Lankester Merrin for making me eat my words, 'When Darkness Comes' takes over as the best song on offer, the pace, power and purpose all off the top shelf! The band certainly know how to please, I'm pretty sure the tingling sensation from down below isn't just an itch that needs scratching - a belter of an album coming to close with the power ballad 'Valley Of Tears'. The band rein in every drop of power from the entire album up to this point, letting it flow with measured intent after a minute or so as 'Valley Of Tears' becomes a hard rocking mid tempo metal swagger with so much oomph, everyone's gonna be flung to the floor!
Overall, a pulsating romp of all out heavy come power come melodic metal, 'Dark Mother's Child' is infectious and head bang-able to the max.
