Fighting For Life

K.A.Z are a metal & rock band from Sweden formed in 2013, releasing their 'Fighting For Life' E.P. in 2017, and their first full length album (also called) 'Fighting For Life' in 2019.

Sweden, a country with a long tradition for producing metal bands from all genres, has now produced K.A.Z - a heavy hitting hard rock band, intent on keeping the tradition well and truly alive. Ten songs across forty five minutes, take the listener on a journey through rock, metal, alternative, progressive and grunge territories - and not a single song appears out of place despite this wide variety of styles. The one minute 'Introduction' is an atmospheric yet mellow intro that builds the tension - and then boom! 'Save Me' hits like a tonne of bricks crashing to the ground. A blend of classic heavy metal and groove, 'Save Me' is up tempo, full of energy, and a bombastic start to the album. 'Beautiful' brings a touch of the sleaze metal style to proceedings, along with the slightest hint of the blues. The bands singer Louise Daun has a deep voice, bringing an earthly tone to the album - well suited to the grunge style that rears its head a couple of times throughout the album.

Taking on the mantle of a power ballad, 'Broken' delivers big, chunky riffs and a more mellow vocal performance. Time to raise your lighters high in the air sports fans, this is gonna be an emotional ride. And just when you think the album is starting to take shape along a path of mid tempo, down trodden and almost melancholy-like, a sudden surge of energy fans the flames of energy, propelling 'Heart Of Glass' along with pace and power. Very much a heavy hitting hard rocker, 'Heart Of Glass' gallops furiously, giving the head bangers of the world the first opportunity to really work those neck muscles. High kicking, heavy punching and loaded with groove, 'In Flames' is a majestic swagger of all out metal. The swing of the albums first half between alternative, progressive, grunge and traditional heavy metal has been seamless, all woven together beautifully.

The second half begins with the blistering pace of 'Insanity' - forging a fiery path as it scurries across the land. Leaving only burn marks in its wake, 'Insanity' is a scorching hot romp of raucous riffing. The heavy hitting groove laden style makes a welcome return with the crowd pleaser 'Truth'. The most melodic song on offer, 'Truth' delivers a sing a long style chorus and plenty of foot tapping and head nodding moments. The meandering journey of differing styles has been incredible, the twists and turns sudden, and just the feeling of not knowing which style you're gonna be hit with next, is exhilarating. 'Wake Up' is what hits next - a progressive metal gem all wrapped up in a meaty groove, with the chorus break strolling into alternative territory. I tell you, if anyone asks "what do K.A.Z sound like?", just play them 'Wake Up', it has everything anyone ever needs to understand the musical direction of the Swedish metallers. And to the final song, the title song 'Fighting For Life'. Chiming in at over seven minutes in length, it's time to raise those lighters high in the air again, as 'Fighting For Life' ambles on, all mellow and dreamy. And the vocal delivery by Louise - whoa, nowhere near as (naturally) deep as elsewhere on the album, in fact, quite angelic and mesmerising. What an unexpected end to an album that dishes out its fair share of surprises.

Overall, a unique blend of varying metal styles, K.A.Z delivers an enjoyable listening experience, attractive to fans of both rock and metal.
