Call Of The Hawk E.P. |
||||||
Greyhawk are a heavy metal band from the USA formed in 2016 releasing the six song E.P. 'Ride Out' in 2018. The bands first full length album 'Keepers Of The Flame' was released in 2020 and featured a galloping gourmet of fast paced heavy metal come power metal. A second E.P. 'Call Of The Hawk' was released in 2022...
...featuring five songs of the bands blistering heavy metal come power metal signature sound. The five songs on offer stretch over a twenty two minute run time - each and every one highly infectious, with blazing guitar solos, soaring operatic vocals, and driving rhythms. Getting us underway, 'Steelbound' hits the ground like a steam roller - the unrelenting rhythm flattening everything and everyone in its way. Also, the aura of the eighties heyday for the iconic NWOBHM evolution fills the air, the pounding guitar sound so synonymous with the early days of heavy metal.
The title song 'Call Of The Hawk', maintains the old school flavour of the previous song, albeit at a higher tempo with much more energy. In fact, the pace is a little but quicker too, approaching the gallop, so famously made err, famous, by legendary British metallers Iron Maiden. And there we go, the gallop is now in full swing courtesy of the pulsating 'Demon Star' - a melodic crescendo of head bang-able heavy metal. Greyhawk are delivering the kinda metal we all know and love, with the traditional metallers the most likely to immediately fall in love with this release.
The heaviest song so far, 'Shattered Heart' picks up more energy, more tempo, and more pace - the "foot on the monitor" feel very much ruling the roost. Greyhawk may be four and a half thousand miles away from where traditional heavy metal was born over forty years ago, but boy do they know how play it! The fifth and final song on offer - clocking in at a mammoth six and a half minutes in length - 'Take The Throne', begins with a doom laden Black Sabbath feel, adopting a mid tempo majestic Judas Priest-like march. Featuring less pace than anywhere else on 'Call Of The Hawk' (the E.P.), 'Take The Throne' lacks none of the oomph and oof of the other songs - especially after the halfway mark!
Overall, five foot on the monitor styled traditional heavy metal songs, every one infectious and head bang-able.
