The School Report 1978-2008 |
||||||
Boxed Set | ||||||
Girlschool are an all female heavy metal band from the UK formed in 1978. Prominent during the evolution of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal during the eighties, Girlschool have survived a number of line-up changes and the death of founding member (guitarist) Kelly Johnson, to establish themselves as one of the UK's most successful heavy metal bands. Since their formation, Girlschool have released thirteen studio albums, numerous live and compilation albums, performed all over the world, and at most if not all the major rock and metal festivals.
The band are recognised as the torchbearers for "all female" metal bands, and are frequently mentioned in the same breath as legendary British metallers Motorhead - the two bands joining forces in 1981 for the 'St. Valentine's Day Massacre' E.P. under the moniker Headgirl - reaching number five in the UK charts! And after four decades in metal, Girlschool are still performing today - having just completed a February 2023 co-headlining tour of the UK with American metal band Alcatrazz. Who incidentally, have just released a new single 'Don't Get Mad... Get Even' - featuring Girlschool.
So what does the future hold for the band - well, as with most bands there's always constant rumours of a new album in the works! For Girlschool, we'll just have to wait and see - but for now, right now (in 2023), Cherry Red Records via Hear No Evil Recordings, have just released the mammoth boxed set 'The School Report 1978-2008' - featuring a selection of songs from the bands first twelve albums, including many rare B-sides and non-album tracks, as well as demo's dating from 1978 up to 2002. And there's more - an ultra rare live recording from the pre-Girlschool Painted Lady!
This five CD in-depth boxed set comes with an extended essay from NWOBHM expert John Tucker, and features plenty of pages of rare photos and sought after memorabilia.
As many regular readers know - I grew up as a teenager during the glorious eighties for metal evolution, witnessing some of the greatest names in heavy metal history develop and shape the sound of the music we love and listen to today - including Girlschool, with the (aforementioned) 'St. Valentine's Day Massacre' E.P. one of my first ever metal purchases! So whether it's a trip down memory lane, starting a new adventure, or just a gentle reminder of how Girlschool grew up - 'The School Report 1978-2008' is a superb collection, chronicling one of the best "all female" heavy metal bands ever!
Overall, an outstanding five CD boxed set celebrating Girlschool's incredible career in heavy metal.
